  1. Installation of the X-Surf IDE driver:
  2. --------------------------------------

  4. Just  copy  the  files "XSurfIDE" and "XSurfIDE.info" to the
  5. sys:expansion  drawer.   With  the start of Binddrivers, the
  6. IDE  drivers will be loaded, and if harddrives are connected
  7. to  the  X-Surf, they are mounted automatically.  The device
  8. name  is "scsi.device", and it can be used with HDToolbox or
  9. HDInstTools.
  10.  
  11. Atapi-devices  like  CD-Roms,  CD-Changers, IDE-Zip or LS120
  12. drives  can  be accessed with the name "xsurf_atapi.device".
  13. Please  mind  that  device  names  are  case-sensitive  when
  14. editing  your  mountfiles.   These two names only have lower
  15. case letters.

  17. Unit numbers:

  20. The  3,5"  and  the 2,5" port can be used independantly, you
  21. can  connect up to four IDE/Atapi devices.  The numbering is
  22. a follows:

  24. Unit 0: Master on the 3,5" port
  25. Unit 1: Slave on the 3,5" port
  26. Unit 2: Master on the 2,5" port
  27. Unit 3: Slave on the 2,5" port
  28.  
  29. Before   connecting  a  2,5"  harddrive,  check  it's  power
  30. consumption.   The  traces  on  the  X-Surf can only stand a
  31. current  of  300mA.   This  low  value  is only reached with
  32. modern  notebook-harddrives  (minimum 10GB).  Especially the
  33. old  harddrives  (less  than  1GB) consume more than 1,5A on
  34. startup.   This may burn the power traces on the X-Surf.  Of
  35. cource, such a defect is not covered by warranty.

  37. Compatibility

  40. The  software devices are compatible with drives larger than
  41. 4GB.   To  be compatible with all the filesystens there are,
  42. the two standards TD64 and NSD64 are supported.  Please mind
  43. that  the devices already support NSD64, so they must not be
  44. patched in order to work with OS3.5.

  47. Known bugs:

  50. The  date  in  the  version  string is not printed properly.
  51. This does not affect proper function of the drivers!

  54. Have  fun  with the X-Surf IDE driver, even if it took a bit
  55. longer  than I promised.  Anyway, I think a free driver that
  56. is  four  months  late is much better than a license that is
  57. 25,- US$ each.
